About & History

The Himalayan Cultural Studies Center (HCSC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of the Tibetan & Himalayan region. Founded in New York by Lama Tsewang Rinpoche under the spiritual guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and His Holiness the 17th Karmapa, the Center serves as a vital bridge between traditional wisdom and the evolving needs of Tibetan & Himalayan communities in the diaspora.

Through education, the arts, mindfulness practices, and community engagement, HCSC has grown into a vibrant hub for learning, cultural connection, and intergenerational exchange. Rooted in a deep respect for tradition, HCSC is committed to fostering innovation in language, arts, cultural education, and resource sharing.

A cornerstone of HCSC is its library, which houses complete Buddhist canons alongside an extensive collection of works on Himalayan history, philosophy, and culture. This welcoming space supports study, reflection, and dialogue, serving as a gathering place for community learning.

The vision of HCSC is deeply inspired by Lama Tsewang Rinpoche's lifelong commitment to service. As former abbot of Nenang Monastery, he founded the Danang Foundation in 2006 — a New York-based nonprofit dedicated to advancing humanitarian and cultural efforts with a focus on education, poverty alleviation, healthcare, cultural preservation, and environmental sustainability.
